Driving Ghana’s Cashless Future: GhIPSS and MobileMoney Fintech Launch ‘Ride with MoMo’ Campaign

Imagine this. A passenger arrives at their destination after a smooth ride through Accra. As they reach for their wallet, they realize they have no cash. Instead of apologizing or searching for the nearest ATM, they simply scan the QR code displayed inside the vehicle, make payment with their preferred mobile money wallet or bank account, receive confirmation within seconds, and continue their journey.

For the driver, it is another completed trip, without the inconvenience of handling cash, searching for change, or losing a customer because of payment limitations. That everyday experience is the future the Ride with MoMo campaign is bringing to Ghana’s transport sector.

Launched by Mobile Money Fintech Limited in partnership with GhIPSS and the Digital Association of drivers, the campaign is designed to accelerate digital payment acceptance among commercial drivers through GhQR, Ghana’s universal QR payment solution.

Unlike traditional payment methods that may require customers and merchants to use the same provider, GhQR allows drivers to receive payments through a single QR code from customers using bank accounts, mobile money wallets, or fintech wallets. The result is a simpler, more convenient, and more inclusive payment experience for both passengers and drivers.

Speaking at the launch, the Chief Business Officer of GhIPSS, Akosua Blay, described the initiative as an important milestone in expanding digital payments across Ghana’s transport ecosystem. She noted that as more Ghanaians embrace digital financial services, payment acceptance must evolve to ensure businesses, including transport operators, can serve every customer regardless of their preferred payment method.

The Ride with MoMo campaign demonstrates how collaboration between payment ecosystem players can translate national infrastructure into practical solutions that improve everyday life.

For drivers, the benefits extend beyond convenience. Digital payments reduce the risks associated with carrying cash, improve record-keeping, support better financial management, and create opportunities to reach more customers. Through the campaign, participating drivers will also have the opportunity to win attractive rewards.

As Ghana continues its transition towards a digitally connected economy, initiatives such as Ride with MoMo illustrate how innovation is becoming increasingly people-centred, meeting citizens where they are and making everyday transactions easier.
