GhIPSS CEO Speaks at SWIFT PMI Event in Nairobi

The CEO of GhIPSS, Mrs. Clara Arthur, joined payment systems directors and central bankers at the SWIFT Payment Market Infrastructure (PMI) event held at the Kenya Monetary Institute in Nairobi, where she spoke on “Advancing Instant and Interoperable Payments in Africa.”
In her presentation, she shared Ghana’s journey through Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), highlighting the role of GhIPSS Instant Pay (GIP) as a digital public infrastructure enabling real-time, interoperable transactions across banks, fintechs, and mobile money operators.
The session highlighted Africa’s steady progress toward instant and interoperable payment systems, driven by the need for efficiency, financial inclusion, and seamless transactions. Drawing on experiences from across the continent, participants shared key lessons and approaches to building effective payment systems.
Insights from AfricaNenda Foundation also pointed to ongoing challenges, including regulatory alignment, interoperability across schemes, and cross-border settlement.
A key takeaway was the need for stronger collaboration at both regional and continental levels, alongside alignment with global payment systems, to fully unlock the benefits of interoperability.
As Africa continues to advance, solutions like GIP demonstrate how national payment systems can support regional integration and drive a more connected digital financial ecosystem.
