Every digital payment begins with trust. Whether someone is sending money to a loved one, paying a merchant with a QR code, transferring funds through their banking app or receiving a salary, there is an expectation that the transaction will be completed safely, securely and exactly as intended. That confidence is one of the greatest achievements of Ghana’s digital payments ecosystem. It has taken years of investment, collaboration and innovation by banks, mobile money operators, fintechs, regulators and payment infrastructure providers to build it. But trust is fragile.
While digital payments have made financial services faster and more convenient, they have also created new opportunities for fraudsters. Today’s fraud is rarely about breaking into systems. More often, it involves manipulating people—through fake phone calls, phishing messages, impersonation, social engineering, and other tactics designed to create urgency and exploit trust.
That is why the Ghana Association of Banks’ “Shine Your Eye” campaign is both timely and important.
More than an anti-fraud campaign, it is a call for behavioural change. Its central message is simple but powerful: pause, verify and think before you act. Fraudsters often rely on pressure and haste. Taking a moment to question an unexpected request, verify the source of a message or contacting your bank directly can make the difference between preventing fraud and becoming a victim. The campaign’s wider theme—“Spot the Fraud. Stop the Fraud.”— recognizes that protecting Ghana’s financial system is a shared responsibility.
This message resonates strongly with us at GhIPSS. As Ghana’s national payment infrastructure provider, our responsibility goes beyond enabling fast, efficient and interoperable payments. We are equally committed to ensuring that the infrastructure underpinning those payments remains secure, resilient and worthy of the confidence that millions of Ghanaians place in it every day.
We continue to strengthen that confidence through resilient payment platforms, robust operational processes, continuous system monitoring, and close collaboration with banks, fintechs, regulators, and other ecosystem stakeholders. Security is built into the way our infrastructure is designed, operated, and continually improved.
Yet technology alone cannot eliminate fraud.
The most secure systems can still be undermined if fraudsters succeed in persuading customers to disclose passwords, PINs or One-Time Passwords (OTP), or to authorize transactions under false pretense. This is why public awareness is as important as technological safeguards.
Every stakeholder has a role to play. Financial institutions must continue investing in fraud prevention and customer education. Regulators and industry bodies must strengthen collaboration and information sharing. Technology providers must continue enhancing security and resilience. Customers, too, have a responsibility to remain alert, protect their credentials and verify unusual requests before acting.
This collective approach is what makes initiatives such as “Shine Your Eye” so valuable. By bringing together banks, regulators, law enforcement agencies and industry partners around a common purpose, the campaign reinforces a simple truth: protecting trust in digital payments is not the responsibility of one institution—it is the responsibility of the entire ecosystem.
As Ghana’s digital economy continues to grow, trust must grow with it. Every secure transaction strengthens confidence in digital financial services. Every informed customer makes the ecosystem safer. And every organisation that invests in fraud prevention contributes to a stronger and more resilient financial system.
At GhIPSS, we remain committed to working with all stakeholders to strengthen confidence in Ghana’s digital payments ecosystem because every secure transaction is more than the movement of money—it is a promise kept.
