Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), the national payment infrastructure provider, secured two prestigious awards at the Africa Digital Economy Awards held over the weekend in Nairobi, Kenya. GhIPSS' product, GhanaPay, was recognized as the Best Government Payment of the Year, while the Chief Executive, Archie Hesse, earned a spot among the Africa Top 50 Digital Economy Leaders.

The Africa Digital Economy Awards, presented in collaboration with the Africa Digital Economy Forum, celebrated digital champions, innovators, creatives, and inventions contributing to various facets of the digital economy. This marks the eighth year of the awards scheme.

Archie Hesse's recent honours include being named the Most Inspiring Payments Business Leader in West Africa at the Africa Bank 4.0 Summit in Lagos, Nigeria. Additionally, he was the exclusive African speaker at the Chicago Payment Symposium in the United States, an annual forum hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for leaders in the payment industry.

GhIPSS has emerged as a trailblazer not only in Africa but globally, with countries and electronic payment providers studying its model. The GhanaPay mobile money service, launched last year, stands out by combining essential mobile money features with banking services, offering users a unique financial freedom experience. GhIPSS has garnered attention globally, with some countries introducing similar products modeled after its offerings in Ghana.

Expressing his gratitude for the awards, Mr. Hesse credited the hard work of GhIPSS staff and management, as well as the strategic direction set by the Board for the company's numerous successes. He emphasized GhIPSS' commitment to collaborating with partner institutions to advance the payments industry, highlighting the pivotal role GhanaPay will play in fostering financial inclusion in Ghana. Mr. Hesse encouraged the public to register for and enjoy the GhanaPay experience.

As part of the ongoing efforts to promote GhanaPay, a series of fairs has been organised nationwide. Recently concluded events took place at Koforidua Technical University, All Nations University, and the Central Market in Koforidua. Subsequent fairs will be held in various locations in Accra such as Katamanto, Timber Market, Dansoman Last Stop, and Chemuena (Chorkor) from November 16th to 24th, followed by the Bono East and Bono regions, including towns like Techiman, Sunyani, Berekum, and Dormaa Ahenkro, from November 27th to December 5th. The GhanaPay Mobile Money Experience Fair will then move to Ada and Sogakope in the Greater Accra and Volta Region on December 11th and 12th, as well as December 13th and 14th, respectively.

Registration for the GhanaPay mobile money service is in full swing across four regions this October. This is a collaboration between Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement System (GhIPSS) and a number of banks. The campaign spans various communities in the Greater Accra, Eastern, Western, and Western North regions, taking place at different times throughout the month.

The exercise is part of the 'GhanaPay Mobile Money Experience Fair' which is intended to create awareness about GhanaPay and to enroll more people onto the payment platform to enable them to enjoy the numerous benefits associated with its usage. Furthermore, this drive also presents an opportunity for individuals and businesses interested in becoming GhanaPay agents to register for the service.

GhanaPay mobile money, similar to traditional mobile money services, is offered by universal banks, rural banks, and savings and loans companies. It provides fundamental mobile money features along with additional banking services tailored to augment users' financial flexibility. Accessible via USSD code (707) or the GhanaPay App, which can be found on the Google Play Store and iOS App Store, this service enables users to seamlessly transfer funds across various mobile money networks and bank accounts. Additionally, customers can conduct cash-in and cash-out transactions with ease. Notably, fund transfers through GhanaPay are free, apart from the statutory Electronic Levy (e-levy) charge.

Samuel Darko, the Head of the GhanaPay Mobile Money Unit at GhIPSS, encouraged the public to seize this opportunity to enroll and experience the convenience of mobile money services. He emphasised that, since GhanaPay is provided by financial institutions, users can leverage their transaction history when applying for loans. He stated, "The benefits of GhanaPay are substantial. It operates seamlessly across networks and is akin to having a bank account because the bank that onboards you recognises and treats you as their customer."

The GhanaPay Mobile Money Experience Fair is set to take place at Ashesi University in Berekusu, Eastern Region, and at Tip-Toe Lane near Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra. Additionally, the campaign extends its reach to Bibiani, Sefwi Wiaso, and Asankragua in the Western North region, as well as Asamankese in the Eastern Region. The GhanaPay registration drive is also scheduled to be held in the mining town of Tarkwa in the Western Region, all within the month of October.
Mr. Darko clarifies that while individuals have the option to download the GhanaPay application and use it, the Fair aims to assist those who may not be technologically proficient, ensuring that they are not excluded from the benefits offered by GhanaPay.

He said the GhanaPay Fair will continue in the month of November, covering areas notably communities in Accra, Koforidua, Sunyani and Techiman in the Greater Accra, Eastern, Bono and Bono East regions respectively.

Residents in Hohoe and Kadjebi, situated in the Volta and Oti regions, are set to benefit from the GhanaPay mobile money service. In addition, individuals interested in becoming GhanaPay mobile money agents can seize this opportunity to register and launch their business ventures.

Dubbed the GhanaPay Mobile Money Experience Fair, the event will take place on September 11th and 12th in Hohoe, followed by September 13th and 14th in Kadjebi. Registration for the GhanaPay mobile money platform is entirely free of charge, and residents are kindly urged to bring their Ghana cards with them.

The experience fair is aimed at providing the public with convenient access to and enrollment onto the GhanaPay Mobile Money service. All major financial institutions will be present at both fairs, allowing the public the freedom to choose their preferred financial institution during registration.

It can save you a significant amount of money, as there are no transaction costs on transfers except for the e-levy." Mr Darko explains that due to the service being offered by financial institutions, it also provides basic banking services. "Your transactions on GhanaPay are directly associated with the bank you registered with, enabling you to utilize your GhanaPay wallet balances to access loans."

Launched just last year, GhanaPay mobile has already witnessed substantial enrollment and boasts of a network of service delivery points through bank branches across the country and some agent locations. It supports various functions, including the purchase of airtime and data across all networks, daily interest accrual on wallet balances, a unique Savings wallet for higher interest earnings, and the ability to pay bills and make payments using the universal GhQR.

This accolade recognizes his exceptional contributions to the payments industry, his efforts to promote digital payment solutions, and his commitment to improving financial accessibility throughout West Africa.

The prestigious award was presented during the recent Africa Bank 4.0 Summit held in Lagos, Nigeria. The Africa Bank 4.0 Awards were established to acknowledge and celebrate the dedication of various organizations, associations, and service providers in the financial services sector. These awards aim to recognize pioneers and visionaries who go above and beyond to transform the Fintech industry, making access to finance in Africa more accessible, innovative, convenient, and affordable.

Mr. Hesse's journey with GhIPSS began when he assumed the role of General Manager in charge of Projects and Business Development shortly after its inception as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Bank of Ghana. Over the years, he ascended to the position of Chief Executive Officer, succeeding the company's first CEO, Mr. Fred France.

As CEO, Mr. Hesse has overseen the remarkable transformation of GhIPSS, collaborating closely with banks and non-bank financial institutions to introduce various electronic payment channels to the public. Some of the notable innovations include Mobile Money Interoperability, GhQR, and GhanaPay.
His primary focus has always been on advancing financial inclusion and expanding the range of instant electronic payment options available to the public. Under hisleadership, GhIPSS has achieved several industry firsts and has received global recognition for its achievements.

In response to receiving the award, Mr. Hesse expressed humility at the recognition and emphasized the importance of continually pushing the industry's boundaries. He extended his gratitude to the dedicated staff, management, and board of GhIPSS for their unwavering support, noting, "Without a great team, this wouldn't have been possible. So, I want to celebrate the staff, the management, and the board for their respective roles and particularly encourage the staff and management to aim to even exceed their current performance."

Currently, GhIPSS, in collaboration with various banks, is vigorously promoting the enrollment of more users onto the GhanaPay mobile money service. Registration is actively underway in different communities in the Greater Accra, Eastern, Western, and Western North regions, with plans to extend the initiative to other parts of the country throughout the year.

 

Residents of Tema and its neighbouring areas will soon experience increased accessibility to GhanaPay mobile money services, thanks to a collaborative effort between the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) and various banks.

On August 30th to the 1st of September, 2023, a dedicated team from GhIPSS and participating banks will host an event at Tema Community 1 to enroll members of the public onto the GhanaPay Mobile Money platform.

The event, dubbed ‘GhanaPay Mobile Money Experience Fair,’ is part of the joint initiatives by GhIPSS and partner banks aimed at providing the public with convenient access to and enrollment on this innovative service. While resembling traditional mobile money services, GhanaPay Mobile Money distinguishes itself by being offered by Universal banks, rural banks, and savings and loans companies.

It extends basic mobile money functionalities while incorporating additional banking services tailored to enhance users’ financial flexibility.

GhanaPay Mobile Money is accessible through both the Google Play Store and the iOS App Store. In an effort to simplify public engagement with the service, GhIPSS and the banks have decided to organize this event in Tema, ensuring that the registration process is brought closer to the local residents.

Notably, GhanaPay stands out by offering fee-free transactions to both mobile networks and bank accounts, with the exception of the obligatory Electronic Transaction levy (e-levy).

Mr. Darko has urged Tema residents to take full advantage of the opportunity to register for GhanaPay Mobile Money at the Meridian enclave within Tema Community 1.

He emphasized that the registration procedure is uncomplicated and swift, only requiring a Ghana card, and is offered to users at no cost.
GhIPSS, along with its banking partners, has been conducting registration drives across the country to bring the public onto the GhanaPay Mobile Money platform. The current initiative focuses specifically on Tema and its surrounding areas.

GhanaPay Mobile Money empowers users to effortlessly transfer funds across diverse mobile money networks and bank accounts. Moreover, customers can conduct cash-in and cash-out transactions at their convenience.

Concurrently, GhIPSS is extending an invitation to individuals and enterprises interested in becoming GhanaPay Mobile Money Agents.
Prospective agents have the option to either attend the event or liaise with their respective banks to initiate the registration process. Mr. Darko further highlighted that appealing packages await those interested in becoming GhanaPay Mobile Money agents.
